Choices are:

1.) Taurus Tracker Series in .357 Magnum with 6 inch barrel MSRP $450

2.) Colt Python in .357 Magnum with 6 inch barrel MSRP $800

Ballots are open, cast your votes! Which one should I get? This is going to be used for a home defense gun beside my bed, and also will serve as my camping gun that I take with me on hiking trips and camping trips. It will also frequently be carried in my truck. So? What do yall think?

Go for the Python. You only live once....might as well enjoy the best.

Those Pythons are NICE guns....BUT for my money, I would go with the Taurus, especially using it the way you described. I have a Taurus 608 with a 6.5 inch barrel. Love it. Great shooter. Only complaint is that the barrel is ported, and it is one LOUD shooter.

If those are your only 2 choices then go with the Python. Better quality, accuracy, and everything else.

Depends. I think a lot of the cost of a Colt is the name engraved on it, personally. The Taurus is a much better bargain. If you want the prestige of having a top tier name on your gun, or you want collectible value, buy the Colt. If you want a gun to use and aren't concerned about the prestige of the name on the side, get the Taurus.

Pros of Taurus:
1) The Taurus will do everything you want it to do, cheaper.
2) If you don't like the grip, trigger, or sights of the Taurus, you have $350 of budget to have it changed to fit you better before you are behind the cost of the Colt.
3) Taurus has superb customer service and an unbeatable warranty if something does go wrong.

I would buy the Taurus, but I view my guns like I do my tools, not as a collector. Your view may vary. If it serves its intended purpose faithfully and reliably, and has a good warranty in case I mess it up, I'm more than satisfied with it.

From an invetment standpoint,Go with the Colt....BUT if you are going to use it,go with the tracker. I have a tracker in .22mag,and love it! The Colt Python is very expensive, some because of the name, and some because it is hand-fitted,hand-tuned action and trigger that IS second to none! But,the average person is NOT going to be able to tell much difference!

But in reality,I would go with a 686 or 586 S&W!!!! THEY ARE the next best thing to a Colt where wheel-guns are concerned!!And you can get one for the price of a Taurus.

I think the ruger gp100 is a better choice than the taurus and will be about the same price.

I'v had a S&W 686 .357 for maybe 6 years now. I LOVE it! Never had any sort of problems and I got it cheap maybe $250 i cant really remember, it was a gift (my first real gun :D ). I started out shootin .38 special with it cuz the kick was a little much for my 10 year old hands :P But anyways, It looks great, feels great, and shoots great. Never a problem and I'v got about 1,000 rounds through it.

My only experience with Taurus was with the Raging Bull in .454. It was an excellent revolver and its only negative, to me at any rate, was its size and weight. For what you intend to do - go Taurus. :2guns:

I bought an Anaconda right before Colt quit makeing guns for the public, boy was that luck.If you go with a new Colt it will have to be made from the custom shop.If money isnt an issue you cant go wrong with the Colt. But for the money the Taurus is the best buy,and they make great guns.Taurus has improved the quality of all of their guns.I would trust the Taurus 100%.Just my 2 cents!

Good Luck!!

Get the Python. Hands down, it's one of the finest revolvers ever manufactured. I've had the opportunity to use several but I've never owned one.

 the taurus revolvers are prone to jam mostly because the cylinder is slammed or flipped shut. however they will jam and taurus will fix it quickly and free, but it will happen again if your are rough. maybe a ruger security six would do, cost effective, good shooter. s&w is a little more, colts are high. it's your money. ;)

If money is no object get the colt. Probably be a more valuable heirloom someday. But for run of the mill hunting and shooting you can't beat the taurus either. I have a tracker in 357 with 6'' barrel ported and their scopemount on it. I put a red dot on it and I really like it. This gun is probably lighter than a lot of the others also. The rubber grips and porting in stainless are all standard features and 7 shots. :2guns:

If you buy the Taurus, you'll end up selling it for alot less than you paid for it. Buy the Python, you'll never regret it. I own a 6" blued python and it is the most accurate revolver that I have ever owned. You'll never lose your money on a python.

You're talking about a working gun. One that will be used alot, out in the elements, left in your truck. Trucks get broken into, you won't miss the Taurus as much if it get stolen.

Get a ruger Security six in .357

can find them cheap, don't pay over $275 for one!!!

won't miss it if it's stolen of lost(while hiking...) good shooter, ajustable sights. Can't lose....

Colt over Taurus hands down...

Take the Python, Colt and Smith are what all other wheel guns are judged by, and what Taurus fails at when trying closing the quality gap.. there is no question the Colt is a far better gun in every respect, and will be a much better investment, quality being one of the reasons that Python costs a lot more out of the gate, and in the end is worth a lot more as well.

For what you described the gun will be used for, I would go with the Taurus or a Ruger. They are not as nice and smooth as the Colt but they are easier on the wallet and they are durable.

If money isn't a problem, buy the python. If money is a problem, and thus you are leaning towards the Taurus, forget that gun and get a Colt King Cobra instead! I love my KC, and while it is nice looking, and fun to shoot, it also holds it value far greater than the Taurus ever will.

crazy, python will hold value better but if you use it as you describe it will get ruffed up and value will suffer. it is by far the better weapon. but for the use you describe i would find an old security six or gp100. for the money better weapon than the tracker and will bring more if you want to sell it down the road.

If something happened to my Taurus M44, I'd shrug and say, "oh, crap."

If something happened to my Diamondback or Gold Cup NM, I'd need professional grief counseling.

Guess what gun I take when I go to the desert?

Yeah, I'd go get a Ruger GP-160 or 161. The Colt costs too much, and the quality is not quite there on the Taurus, The Ruger is quite a bit smoother than the Taurus; I've got a buddy with both.
