Santa brought digital camera, so here she is, with a chopped barrel and a newly pinned front sight. I post full details about the project when the re-crown is done and shots are fired:

that is one wild config. way cool. I have a million questions but will try and keep it reasonable.....what's the benfit of having the scope so far forward? is that a red-dot scope? what kind of mount is that and where do you get it? that thing is sick.

The foward mount is called the "scout scope" confirguration. Some say that it is for easier target acquisition and better field of view. The rail is the Ultimak and its just a 2x pistol scope, but a red dot is in the future.

djskit, that is one W_I_C_K_E_D Mini. That #2 picture almost made me duck for cover. What kind of Tact. light, and mount is that. Your mini, makes me want to buy another just for Tactical use. It is sharp! :D Also your pictures are so sharp, what kind of camera did you use. I gots ta get me one!

Hey if I can impress Cajungeo, I must be doing something right!
The light is a TACMIII (about 1/2 the price of a similar Surfire, and works just fine) The mount is one that is designed for the AR that I picked up through brownells, just has 2 bolts that I drilled through the stock - I worked out well because the Ruger stock has a gap between the stock liner and the inside of the stock.
The camera is a middle-of-the-line sony that I got at Target for about $350. Real happy with it.

What I'm waiting for is the results of my garage shortening and re-crown (recall my Dewey rod fiasco).
The smitty wanted to charge my $75 for a short and re-crown and would of had to pull off the barrel, I said "forget it" and bought a brownell re-crown kit for about $85.00. Should be here next week.

Nice Mini! I love the Ultimak!!!

Be careful with red dots. I have a very nice Leupold Gilmore LG-1 and love it, but it is difficult at times to see it and it is mounted in the RR rings on the receiver.

Make sure this wicked Mini has a sufficiently large dot (2 MOA minimum; 4 MOA would probably be easier to see). Not trying to be pushy, but I'd HATE to see you not able to see your aiming point.

Why the Ultimak over the Aimtech? Just curious.

Awesome... I think I wet myself... don't really care either...

Thought the Aimtech just looked too clunky and not interested in using the "see through" feature.
The Ultimak is real low profile and really gives the mini a "21st century" look (if that's possible:rolleyes: )

Can you use the iron sights through the red-dot scope mounted on the Ultimak?

djskit,

What is the beam/spot of light from the TACM like? Surefire makes nice lights that really fill up the entire spot, Mag-Lite makes a light that rings out in degrees of illumination but you can beat someone to death with the light's body.

Is the TACM more like the Surefire or like the Mag-lite? I'd like a Surefire, but all their stuff is turning out WAY to expensive and usually needs a pic-rail to mount it. Streamlight is tempting, but big. TACM looks to be the best compromise if it lights up the area well... plus, it looks much nicer than the new Surefires do.

Any opinions?

Thanks,

Mughi-14

Hey Mughi - The TACM is like a low budget Surfire. Mine has a remote pressure switch but you can also get an end cap switch.
I got mine through Fulton, but I think Brownells sells them too.
TACM web sit is pretty hokey.
I've used the light at a night shoot and put about 100 rounds down range. The thing worked great and was good as new when done and brightness compared well to the other surfires and steamlights on the line. It is 100% "high tech polymer" (Plastic) but seem very tough.

That is by far the best looking mini I have ever seen. Is that an XS ghost ring sight? How well does it work? (minus the scope, of course)

Yep, XS ghost ring rear and XS white line front sight too!
That rear sight gives you the same opening as the M16A2 "battle sights" and is great out to 200yds. I'm diggin the white post front and with the home shortened barrel it shoots great (1.5" to 2" at 100 with winchester white box and scope)
THE PROBLEM IS.....
With the 16.5" bbl, the front sight is too low! Cranked the rear sight down as far as possible and still shot too high!
My only option now is to get the old front sight and weld up some hieght and then file is down untill its just right.....
That's just one thing too many to deal with right now so the project is on hold:mad:

About your rear sight. Call Ruger and tell them your mini is shooting too high and you need a medium low and an extra low peep blade. They will send it to you in two to three days free of charge. The off the shelf minis have the hole dilled in the center and the manufacturing tollerances are so inconsistant, some weapons sights will not work due to every other one being so different from the others. I had the same problem and read a post here where someone had done the same thing. I called them on tuesday and by friday I was sighted in.

That is a very nice piece. A few questions. How much did you shorten the barrel? Did you need to modify any of the operating system?
Who did you buy the Ultimac mount from?
Is the stock "StocK". If you mentioned it I keeping over looking it.
What scope are you using? I have a Leopold M8 (EER) blue and it looks like I need to find a silver. I have used it regularly on my blue SBlckhwk and am looking at moving it over to my Mini.
Thats a fine job you done.

16.5" (basically at the back of the front sight band - used it as a guide - no other operating mods.
Ruger factory stock
Ultimak from them direct, but I see that brownells is now selling them.
The scope is a Nikon 2x pistol scope.
The funny thing is this rifle will not look a thing like this in a couple of weeks - front sight problem sank it. (more later)
So, I'm re-creating this rifle with my stainless ranch - pics soon.:usa:

Voruzon:

I have the identical Ultimak rail and Leupold LG-1 red dot sight. I can still see the sights through it. You lose a fraction of the bottom of the from sight. Maybe 25%. But the iron sights are still very useable.

COOL!

Curious, since I have an ultimake, what rings you are using, those look nice!

They look like the exact same rings that came with my Leupold LG-1 red dot.

Not to be nasty or nothing but they look like the cheapo rings that came with my Ultra Dot sight. The Ultimak will accept any Weaver style or Pictinny ring.

Hi DJSKIT,

That is one GREAT looking MINI-14. Fo' SHIZZLE!

Great job!

One question about it.
What is the purpose of cutting the barrel down? Would'nt that affect accuracy?

Now you have a NEW setup? I just realized that the posted pictures were from almost a YEAR ago.

WAITING!
