I am reloading 200gr SWC's using Unique to a velocity of 800-850fps. This is the dirtiest burning stuff I have ever seen, is this because of the reduced load I am using and therefore incomplete burning of the propellant or is this the usual result with Unique?

Unique burns somewhat dirty but without leaving unburned powder in my reloads. You might try Bullseye if you are loading light loads.

G'day dvdstdg, and et al.,

Yes, that is one of the powders that leaves quite a bit of residue. The good side is that the residue does not appear to hamper pistol operations untill it gets to be quite rediculous.

However, with my personal experience, I just don't care to have that much to clean each time I go shooting. For most of the pistol calibers that I shoot, Winchester 231, or any of the Clays lines are the powders of choice for me. Each of them provides good quality, economical, and consistent results.

When usings the Clays line, I find that I don't even bother to clean the brass most of the time. They burn very clean. As log as the brass passes visual inspection, they just get reloaded.

Merry New Year! Cheers!

I use Unique in .45 long colts & also in .45 auto. It is messy, but around here, I can buy it in bulk much cheaper than other, less messy powders. Price would not matter without performance, but I get good results from the unique loads. I do, however, clean thoroughly after each shooting session.
