A question of recoil...

...in reference to starting a youngster.

My question is two fold:
1. Wouldn't a semi-auto have less recoil than a pump/ss/ou?
2. I hate to assume so; does 28ga low brass have less recoil than 20ga low brass?

What I'm thinking is that a 28ga semi-auto would be the best thing to start a youngster on as far as recoil is concerned.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Go with a 410 , this wont make them scared to shoot or in pain and smilin to keep dad happy. The next step is to really show a child how to trust themselves with a gun, when confidence is a reality let them fire a 12 gauge once to feel real recoil. For Christmas install a gas operated 20 gauge under the tree and celebrate for a lifetime. Just the way I learned without the Semi auto under the tree.:usa: :D

My wife is 4'7" and weighs 115 pounds soaking wet, and she shoots a 20 guage Browning semi-auto and has no problem with recoil. I think the key is to get a gas operated gun. Hope this helps :2guns:

The 28 guage semi-auto would be a great way to start. Although 28 guage shells are pricey. I think you and your son would be happier with a 20 guage. Semi-auto would be fine, or you could buy a pump and use 7/8 ounce loads. If that is still to much for him buy a decelerator recoil pad. I read a study that said recoil is preceived two ways. One is by the force felt on the shoulder and the other is the noise the gun makes. So 7/8 ounce loads and ear plugs with muffs over them should be just right for your son, plus the 20 guage is just right for bushytails and rabbits. Hope I helped.:usa:

i just picked up a Browning Auto-5 in 16ga from my local for just under $200. With the long recoil action, I would say felt recoil is just about nonexhistant. Franchi makes 20s and 28s on JB's long recoil design also. I would love to pick up one of the 28s for upland game. It is the lightest auto made. Kinda nice for lugging around here in the Rockies.
