Well lets start this new Forum off right, What are your favorite or best liked revolvers.

I like my S&W 686 with a 4 inch barrel. Its accurate handles well and 357 magnum is a great caliber. I bought it before the sellout.

I tend to favor auto pistols but everyone should have at least 1 revolver for backup.

When are you planning to get the bipod for that hand cannon?
Will it be a hunting gun?
It's a beauty, like the one Joe Piscipoe had in Johnny Dangerously.
"It shoots through schools."

It is quite the cannon isn't it, I do plan on taking it deer hunting with me this fall. Saw it in a gun shop and after three trips back and the inability to quit thinking about it I bought it. The weight of the long barrel makes it a pussy cat to shoot. Now I'm looking for a Smith 27 and a Smith 57 hopefully both in 8 3/8 inch barrels.

First let me say I'm mostly a 1911 type, not a wheelgunner, but...

The S&W 442 gets a lot of packin' miles...
the Dan Wesson 15, what a shooter for the money...
the Brazilian contract 1917, smooooth action, real cartridge...
3"HB round butt Model 10, slick version of a real classic...
the '17 Colt just to keep the S&W company...

mygod could this mean I'm turning into a...no no, 2 of them are 45ACP, they don't count...do they?

WHO DID THIS TO ME:eek:

Smith & Wesson 686 Six inch in .357 very smooth:p

Last weekend a group of us went over to the old dump pit and did a little clay blowing. I realy liked a desert eagle in 44 mag, I got 3 clays off a sand bank at 50 yards with a 10 shot clip!
I'll never tell if they wher the ones I shot at...thats my little secret!

Also shot a 45-70, not sure the maker but OH---MANNN! I cant tell you if I actually hit anything with it or if the crater it left just engolfed the pigeon like a black hole! Either way the shock-wave should of killed anything in approximatly a ten foot circle. :cannon:

05-21-2002, 10:57
Punchie- You have a 5" nickeled M27, too? Isn't that just about the best looking gun ever made? Mine was one of 500 sold to the Florida Highway Patrol in the mid-1970s and has FHP stamped on the left side of the frame. Yours one of these? I ordered mine from a distributer when I had an FFL about 15 years ago. It arrived in 100% unfired condition. Must have been a spare or was issued to a detective who never actually carried it.

punchie
05-21-2002, 12:11
Saxon, you would not believe where I got the 5" M27 from or what I had to pay for it. About 5 yrs ago it came in a 'lot' of confiscated weapons that was auctioned by a large metro jurisdiction. Lord knows how long it stayed around the evidence room. When we got it it was in an airtight baggie, couldn't even see a memory ring on the cylinder, and only discolored on two chambers from being fired. Bottom line was that I had to pay only 150 for it as part of the 'lot'.

Every time I start to kick myself for paying to much for a new (to me) gun, I pull that beauty out, gaze and fondle it, wipe it down and put it back in the safe. Sure makes me feel better.

It's not actually mine, but my favorite revolver is a .36 Navy Colt black powder my uncle assembled. It's a blast to shoot, although reloading it does take some getting used to. :D I've been saying I'd get one myself for years, but I never seem to get around to it...

It's not tactical. You can't carry it. It's a super hobby gun, though.

I have always liked the old k frames. The pieces all fit so tight you couldn't see the seams unless you looked close. They always shot well for me. (unless someone screwed up the cylinder crane playing gangster) I've owned a bunch and still have several. They put a lot of care in the fitting and the finish that is very rare today.

My favorite: Smith M29 4"...pinned and recessed. Too heavy to carry, too short to shoot alot with heavy loads, but boy I love it! Second favorite, Smith 586 4". Custom trigger job...well not really, just like the 29, it have been fired and dry fired close to 10,000 times. Does wonders for that carbon steel. They are great to take to the range, nobody wants to shoot "that old thing", I guess its not as good as Glock or something.

punchie
05-27-2002, 21:14
'clees. I still get a lot of "that ol thing' when I go to the range. This is usually followed by "did you see how fast and accurate that old fart shot that thing" when I break out one of the 625s and a handful of moon clips.

I had my Redhawk chopped down to 4" for CCW and daily carry. It'll be used for hunting as well. I stoke it with Specials for defensive work and magnums for hunting. I have some more finish work to go on it since the cutdown, but it sure totes nicely on the belt now! :)

My Ruger Security Six has outlasted most fads and all females except my wife. But I've had the gun a lot longer. I like the fact that with wheel guns once its loaded you just have to think about where its pointed. Yeah youre limited on shots but when a gun feels like an old friend you dont worry about that in the field.:usa:

I love the S&W line of K frame hand guns. I now have 3. My fav. is a 4in mod 66. Took my CCW class with it and shot the best group the instructor ever had in his years of teaching. With the right leather, its not a bad carry gun and if the world ever does go to pot I can take 2 and 4 legged animals out to 50 yrds with it.

I have a 1933 M95 Russian Nagant revolver that is in like new condition that I got from Century a couple of years ago for $49.95

This is the one where the cylinder moves forward to seal of the gap between the cylinder and barrel to eliminate the gas leakage and promote greater velocity.

This moving of the cylinder results in about a 25 pound double action trigger pull.

The gun has stuff stamped all over it if you are a stamp freak. It has a rebuild stamp but either it is new or they did an amazing arsenal refurbish.

The Fiocchi Nagant revolver ammo is a bit scarce right now. I have a 32acp cylinder for firing cheap ammo and I have a Lee die set for using Starline 32-20 brass to make cheap non-gas seal plinking ammo.

Not the most high tech handgun but it is quite strange and lots of fun to shoot.

I carried a Smith for ten years and shot Rugers on the side at the same time. I'd take them in this order:

2. Ruger Security Six .357 six inch
3. Smith and Wesson Model 19 .357 4 inch
4. Smith .41

If I could have only one wheelgun, it would definitely be my OM Ruger .44 Super Blackhawk. Not even a contest.

Of course, I'd long and loudly lament a good K-frame S&W .38 or .357. I like the 14" twist and the looks of the Colts, but in DA, I just aclimated myself to the S&W, and just can't get used to the Colt's actions. Beauty is its own excuse for being, though, so .....

Then there's that new little ss Ruger .32 H&R (I just can't call that lil' round a "magnum" after so many years with the .44) Ruger Single Six. Man! That neat little contoured grip REALLY fits my hand nicely! Ever pick up a handgun, and INSTANTLY say, "Hey! I think I can SHOOT this one?" That's the experience I had with that little .32 Ruger. NEAT!

And then too, what heart amongst us beats so dead as to NOT love the old Colt Peacemaker???? The original "eagle" rubber grips just nestle in my hand like a baby nestles up to mama's breast!

Favorite wheelgun???? I guess it's like askin' Dad which species of fish he liked to eat best: "Whichever one I've got!"

OK, the question was "Favorite"... as in 1.

That'd be my S&W 629 Trail Boss (the original special run 1994 vintage) with 3" Magna - Ported barrel. I carry it more often than any other when I'm out yahoo-yaying on my ranch in the Nevada desert.

It's tough to go wrong with a S&W N Frame. I have several. The original series 629's in four and six inch are a lot of fun but do beat you up after a couple hundred rounds. I would have to go with my M25-5 four inch in .45 Colt with the AA#5 or HS7 handloads I make for it.

Tough question.......gotta say my S&W Model 16-4 x 6", just a tackdriving small game machine. RCBS 98 grain SWC's from 800 to 1200 FPS......put the sights on it, and the critter is as good as cooked.

Now, in bear country the Redhawk 44 x 5.5" gets the nod.....but I really prefer the CZ-550 in 9.3 x 62 for large nasty furry things with claws and teeth.

Stengun--

I would have a tough time picking a favorite from your examples given.

I just picked up an updated version of your S&W 44 Special--a M-624 x 6.5". It gets its maiden voyage in a couple hours, with Lyman 429421's at 800 FPS. Should be fun!

My favorite, actually i have had 2 that i loved..and i regret selling. the first, was a Colt King Cobra .357 with a 4" barrel, the other and probably the better shooter. but not as pretty was a stainless Dan Wesson model 15 in a .357 mag., it also had a 4" barrel.

The new (to me) S&W M-624 x 6.5" did right fine on its maiden flight. Like all N-frame Smiths with any real recoil, the cylinder latch abraded my right thumb--those factory target grips don't work for me. Pachmayr Grippers will resolve that problem. Otherwise, performance with 2 of 3 different cast bullets was pretty good. The revolver did NOT care for 200 grain FN (44-40 design, sized .431"), but doted on both Lyman #429421 (Keith SWC/plain-base) and on Lyman #429244 (Thompson SWC/GC). I ran both designs to 950 FPS, and fine accuracy resulted.

One of my favorite wheelguns--the S&W Model 16-4 x 6"--did its usual fine work with both jacketed and cast bullets. Absolutely drop dead accurate--as a very unwise jackrabbit learned while I was running Sierra 90 grain JHP's through the piece. About 75 yards away from my firing point, this critter hopped out from behind a palo verde bush some 15 minutes after I started shooting. His bad luck--the revolver is sighted at that distance with these loads. The coyotes need an easy meal now and then.

A great day, all around. Cold desert, all to myself, and after the shooting bit a roundabout trip homeward through some awesomely beautiful canyonland country.

Man, what a collection! Can I come over and play? :o

Personal favorite was a 3" SW 57 41 Maggie, Pachmayr Compac grip, shooting Remington factory 170's, the muzzle flash was measured in yards. But what a hoot to shoot, and with target handloads, deadly as a rifle out to 75 yards.

There was also a SW 686 4", shot a genuine 3/4" group with it, open sighted, at 25 yards. Still have the target. Used to use it in the local Police League matches, and it made me look GOOD!
The trigger job was the results of 45,000 rounds in four years, mostly hot handloads, plus lots of dry-firing. When it finally wore out I sold it to a little old lady for a house gun, and the bought the 41.

Those were the good old days!

What would any of y'all reccomend for the person who was to start out, as far as brand, caliber, etc. ? I want a "Truck Gun"(my 30-30 is getting lonely) , for defense, and possibly hunting(deer, varmints in turbans...). Any suggestions? Single Actions are fun, but are they recommended?

Thanks,

Need I say more S&W 686, in 357 either 6 or 7 shot you can't go wrong. Its a great dependable gun. Its stainless and has Hogue grips. Speed loaders abound.

I am mainly an automatic fan. However, I also like the .357 mag. for its versatility and power. During my lifetime, I've owed two Colt Pythons and an S&W Model 66 snub. My current favorite is a Ruger .357 w/3 inch tube. I like its accuracy, durability and concealability. Next year, I plan to drop it off at Teddy Jacobsons for a trigger job.

I would recomend any of the following. Because I have had them and used them for deer hunting.

Ruger Super Backhawk .44 mag
S&W Model 29 44 mag
I have used those, but I can also recomend the Super Redhawk, as my father in law once had one for deer.

I would also recomend that you start out useing 44 S&W Specials, and when you have mastered it, then go up to 44 mags.

Cowboy is your 617 a 6 or 10 shot. I had the 10 shot with a six inch barrel and it spit lead something fierce. I had also read that the semiauto 22s were more accurate then revolvers. I traded in the 617 for a Para Ord 14/45 LDA. Also replaced the 617 with a Ruger MK11 bull barrel Government target model which I like better.

Cowboy glad to hear your 617 is good. I had mine for a few years bought it new with a 6inch barrel. It spit like crazy everytime I had it on the range. I am much happier with my Ruger MKII. I was surpised to read in a gun mag that semi-auto 22s were more accurate then revolvers. What do you think? At least in my experiance it seems to be true. S&W does make the best revolvers though I love my 686.

Hey Commander!

What do you mean it "spit lead"? I just picked up my 4" 686p and am considering a 10 shot 617 in the near future. (still deciding between the 4" and 6")

Sorry for the ignorance.

The cylinder didn't exactly line up with the forcing cone and a tiny bit of the bullet would get shaved off spitting out the sides. It would hit my hand or some times I could feel it on my face. It really got dirty on the cylinder face and round the forcing cone.

I bought the 617 for the same reason your thinking about it its similarity to the 686. They are nearly identical so its a good match. I could have sent it back to S&W for warrentee work but I figured it would be easier to trade it in.

I could have sent it back for warrentee work but I had such a hassle returning my Taurus that I didn't want to deal with another one on a gun I didn't like that much. The gunsmith I used said that it may have voided the warentee if he worked on it. I am much happier with my Ruger MKII which I feel more comfortable with seem to shoot better. I think the timing on a 10 shot revolver must be a little more complex then a 6 shot.

Probably should have started a new thread for this one...

Does anyone know why the trigger and hammer are discolored in the stainless S&W revolvers. It's ugly. When I take mine apart for the trigger job, I think I'll polish out the hammer and trigger.

TC, Your hammer is like mine but my trigger is REALLY ugly. Is this from heat treating the parts or something? It looks like old spilled diesel down the side of a dusty truck.

I broke into the revolvers in the late 70's, Started with Gp100 6" heavy barrel shot it alot great gun. Went next to a ruger super blackhawk S.S. shot it alot , went to a super redhawk shot it alot and finally ended up with a freedom arms 454 . I loved the Ruger's they never let me done in the field, but the Freedom is just a great big Step above. 45 colt, 454 it don't matter. For me it's the best Single action revolver made. If I had to pick a favorite though, I'd pick my classic SMITH and WESSON Model 29 .44 Magnum. Blued, six inch barrel, all original and PRISTINE.

There is something about the classic 'Dirty Harry' weapon that has always intrigued me.

Favorite Wheelgun a S&W USGI 1917 that was reblued by S&W in the early seventies and had the trigger worked on to give in a even better pull. It had also been fitted a pair of Gonsalvo Alves(sic) grips that are a perfect match, along with the orginal griips refinished. What is really unusual is that S&W made up a factory box for it with the Model numer i.e. Second Model Hand Ejector Model 1917, barrel lenght and with the serial number on the box also. Came with historical letter by Jinks and receipt for work done on it. It looks almost new and shoots amazingly well with 45Auto Rim Cartridges. The work was done by S&W for a former police chief whose deptment had purchased a large number of S&W revolvers, which is why they went out of their way to make it nice. It had been in his family many years, his father having owned it which goes back a long time. I was lucky in buying it anwering an ad in a local advertising type paper.

Ruger security six 357. After that I'd take a ruger speed six with the barrel bobbed to 3 inches. The new GP-100 has such a small ejector I'm always afraid I'm gonna break it.

aquaphreak- KORTH revolvers are convertable from what I understand. Brace yourself and be prepared for sticker shock. Other than that rugers can be converted to take 9mm moon clips as most revolvers can by a knowledgeable gun smith. Smith makes a 45LC that takes 45ACP moon clips. I'm sure there are others out there too.

Just got an e-mail from my brother in Oregon................Gun Country.

He dropped me photos of a revolver called "Medusa". It is stated to be able to fire multiple loads of various rounds in the venerable .38 calibre.

Article states that it successfully fired one cylinder with 9 mm, .357 mag, .38 Special and .380 loaded at the same time. No cylinder was swapped out. All in the same one.

Article was dated 1997 and possibly came from Popular Mechanics. Now if I can learn how to insert pix on this site

I don't know the 460 round well enough. Never heard of that before. Musta snuck by me. Is there enough room between the cylinder face and the frame for moon clips to shoot 45ACP?

Tend to like a lot of different revolvers (never really met one I didn't like) but my contents of the safes says I am partial to the SAA (originals as well as clones) and modern versions such as the Ruger Blackhawk.

Presently have single actions in .22LR, .22Mag, .32-20, .38Spl, .357, 9MM, .41Mag, .44Spl, .44-40, .44 Mag, .45LC, and .45ACP.

Favorite single action is my Ruger "Flattop" in .44 mag.....7 1/2" barrel, stag grips, and carrying a 4 digit serial number that indicates it was a first year production piece. After perhaps 5000 rounds fired it will still keep 6 shots inside 3" at 50 yards (about as good as I can hold anyway).

Ruger still makes great guns but none like the originals. The Blackhawk / Super Blackhawk were a step backwards and the "New Models" were a near crime.

When just nosing around the woods my favorite revolver is a SAA in .32-20. Light enough for small game encountered (rabbits / squirrels) for the pot and heavy enough if shot carefully to handle the odd wild hog that might come along.

I think I am torn between 3 wheel guns.

Taurus 608SS4 that I had tuned by a good smithy.
- shoots 2" groups w/o having to put much effort into it
- 8 shot 357 magnum
- wears hogue mono-grips... makes shooting ALOT nicer

S&W model 28-2
- Big N-frame gun and heavy... wears a good surface of blue with just a slight hint of holster wear.
- LOVES 158gr SWC ammo and A2400 or W296
- Hogue goncoalve monogrip with finger groves make this an easy gun to draw and holster
- TACK DRIVER!!!

Ruger Blackhawk 45lc 4 5/8"
- Accurate
- 45acp cylinder included
- likes 200gr cowboy loads with 6gr of trailboss

If I had to pick just one, it would be the Taurus (please, no snickering), but, the Ruger Blackhawk is also a favorite "fungun" of mine as well.
- devours 300gr XTP bullets with W296 behind it

Dam I have got to get out of New Jersey. I would have to drive for quite awile to find woods big enough to stalk. Love that 686 as well. I'll have to star saving for a new handgun.

I would have to say my favorite is a S&W 627-5PC 5" SS .357 MAG.
Honorable mention must go to my 25-2 .45 ACP and Ruger NMBH 5 ½” SS .45 Colt.

I personally prefer my S&W 625 bored out to 460 Rowland. Nothing like something short of a 45 winchester magnum for stopping power, plus the ability to shoot 45 acp as well. My next purchase will hopefull be a S&W 8 shot 357 magnum however.

My favorite is a 6" S&W 19-2 Triple T, target grips, trigger and hammer. It's old, the bluing's pretty worn, the action's slick, it hits where I point and it always goes bang.
