Any one have some device sold by some guy in bellingham,
washington state that holds open the bolt and does various
advertised neat things? and is it worth 45 bucks?

what is it supposed to do that proper loading technique won't do ?

Ditto on that - keeping the blade-edge of your hand, near the base of your fingers, against the Op Rod handle will (near) guarantee your hand and THUMB) are pushed out of harm's way.

Basically it does two things.

It keeps the clip from being ejected after the last round. So you can insert an empty clip and then load as many rounds as you want.

It also keeps the bolt from tripping open when the eighth round is inserted. You have to pull the op rod to the rear like an M1A.

I don't have one but this is the description I got from Mr. Holbrook; or a paraphrase of the description.
