A technical question here for those who understand the mechanics of the rear sight. How is the positive click achieved? If someone would care to post a photo to help explain this I would be most appreciative.

Not quite sure what you mean by that - make the rear sight go up? if that's the case - just rotate the left knob on the rear sight.
Is that not working? Maybe the tension screw on the rigt side is tight? Do you have a screw or a bar on the right? Either way, try loosening it a click and see if that fee's things up.
Hope that helps.

I understand the movements. What I don't understand is how the stops are made. I do not have an M1 so I'm not having any specific problem. I'm guessing there is an arrangement of detents milled into the receiver, but I'm just guessing. I'd like to have that explained to me and if possible, shown to me. I don't have any close friends who own an M1 or an M1A, and those I do know with one I don't feel comfortable asking them to strip off their sights to show me the receiver. Besides, I only see those guys once a month at the range. Does that clear up the point of my question?

I'm with you now!
OK - there are two parallel ears that com up off the reciever and the two knobs are held against them with a cross screw. Around the hole where the screw goes are indents that match up with indents on the knob.
Perhaps these will help...
