AR $price$ question

hi. i tried a quick google & couldn't get any definative answers. when i get a chance, i'll check it out at my local gunshop.

but PU members, and the info they provide, seem to get you as good info as any other source, so a question;

what is the highest, lowest, and average price one might expect to pay for an AR? i'm talking about walking into a gunstore/sporting goods store, and buying the new gun...not buiding one from different parts off internet sites, or used guns.

i have seen bushmasters at academy, always a little over $1000. i assume this is about an "average price?" what about an AR that has a better reputation like colts? how much more are piston driven AR's?

i'm not in the market, just curious...thanks for any input.

As for the lowest price for a COMPLETE AR, I would not buy one for less than $600 USED. Armslist.com has plenty on there for that price. Of course, you're talking fixed carry handle varieties. I like the carry handle though. Put a quad rail handguard on there and stick a nice holosight on it .. co-witness .. and you've got a good platform.

If you want an average price, I'd say $950-$1250 for say an M&P 15 and comparible rifles. As for HIGH prices, good grief .. you can spend THOUSANDS on one! If I were you, I wouldn't buy a decked out one (lights, lasers, optics etc) because you can build one up yourself and save a ton.

The main thing that jacks AR's up in price are the ones with piston-driven systems. The gas system makes the rifle dirty very quickly because it "poops where it eats" and that's a bad thing in many ways. The normal variety however can be more reliable than the piston variety sometimes though .. even with the gas system's downfalls. The tech is new for the piston AR's and unless you get the right one, it can be trouble. Get a good one though .. and that's a sweet little carbine!

I can't tell you much about which piston systems you might want to look at, because I haven't researched it. However, if I were going to buy an AR right now .. new .. I'd probably go with a Rock River (standard, flat top) or a Bushmaster. OR .. if you can find one before they pull them off the shelves, I'd look for a Sabre Defense XR-15. The problem is you won't be able to get it serviced from the factory if they konk out. They might sell them super-cheap though .. if any are still on the shelves.

thanks, like i said, not in the market, just curious.

does this sound about right?

cheapo (new) = about $800? (though the cheapest i have ever seen in store is $950)

average/decent = 900-1200+

high end/piston = 1500+

that's kinda what i figured. thanks for your help.

Not where I'm from. That's about normal even at the cheaper stores.

My Bushmaster ran me $950. I've seen some way up there. Haven't seen many lower than $850 unless they were blowing them out.

check Spikes Tactical. It's not for me but for the features you get, it's hard to beat.

hawkguy,

It's going to depend on what manufacturer you go with. For instance, you're going to pay more for a Colt, versus a DPMS AR-15.

Another huge variable is the components and/or upgrades you go with. For instance, a standard A2 handguard is going to be A LOT less than a Daniel Defense Lite Rail 12.0. BTW, some manufacturers will offer various upgrades with their rifles.

If you're simply looking for a good price for an "entry level" AR-15, as already has been mentioned, Spike's Tactical is an option. Another option would be a rifle from Del-Ton.

Of course, there's always the "build it 'yerself" option. But, I understand this is not always an option for some, and others just want to buy-n-shoot. And, I respect that.

However, I will say this...you can get a DPMS Sportical rifle kit for around $500, add a lower receiver for about $120, and a carry handle rear sight assembly for another $100 (or less). Now, you're into an AR-15 for a little over $700, give or take $50. Of course, there's some tinkering that's required.

And, I'll make the argument that it's time well spent.
