"AA" mini mag/shotgun...

years ago, i got a clamp that allows you to mount a mini mag flashlight to the end on my shotgun. well after several rounds put down range this fall, i noticed that the light did not work the other day. i thought the batteries were dead... i opened the back of the light only to fint the batteries had leaked! i took the light off the shotty and took the light all the way apart. the batteries had ruptured... the rear battery "+" end was crushed completely... this was from recoil im sure. they were duracell batteries.

im not sure what to do, the light will go back to grainger (it has a lifetime warry). when i get a new light, is there anything i can do to keep the same from happening? (yes- remove the batteries when using the shotty for fun/plinking)....
